While writing Reclaiming JOY I learned the value of rewarding ourselves for milestones along our journey to accomplishing an ambitious goal. What's interesting is for all of my life, I have been disciplined and have not "needed" a reward to propel me forward. This time was quite different!!
How so? Well, writing the book was another full time job...and I already have one of those as the Co-Founder of Bronxville Wellness Sanctuary!! In addition to this, I decided to self-publish and gave myself a rigorous timeline of 7 months from concept to completion-- meaning-- the book would be available on Amazon at the completion date of May 2016.
The discipline required to stay on track was excruciating at times. I worked 7 days a week and pretty much became a social introvert, allowing myself only one social outing each week. What kept me going was a promise I made to myself: when (not if!) I completed the book by my target date, I would reward myself and celebrate with a vacation to someplace really awesome. For me, this place was Aruba. In addition to this larger reward, I also rewarded myself with small things along the way. For example, when the draft for Chapter One was complete, I watched a funny movie. This may sound trivial, yet when every second counts, the 2 hour movie was like a dream come true.
As you see by the pictures, I accomplished my goal and celebrated Reclaiming JOY, Aruba style!!
My questions to you are-- what ambitious goal do you have? What is the big reward? What are the smaller rewards that will keep you on track?
Keep in mind the "big" reward doesn't have to cost a lot of money. The reward is anything that motivates you and that is unique to each of us!!
